Transforming Complex Data into Clear Stories and Actions

Miniature Rooms

I enjoy creating detailed miniature scenes by hand. My first was made when I was 13 with nothing but a Pop Tart box and a glue gun, but now I plan more detailed rooms, sometimes entire houses. All my miniatures are made using a 1 cm = 1 ft scale. I mostly use materials I have lying around my house, though I have expanded as I've made more and learned new techniques. Almost everything is made from cardboard, using thick tackboard for walls and furniture and cereal boxes for smaller details. Some pieces, mostly kitchen counters, are designed and 3D printed by me. I love using polymer clay to create small decorations like plants or using paper to make little boxes and wall decor. All of my miniatures are on my Instagram @little_rooms_by_malin, but I want to show a few favorites.

Cozy Bedroom

I designed this bedroom around the idea of a wide window sill with a cushion. The room is very small, so I wanted it to look as cozy as possible. I had a scrap piece of wood paper from a miniature room kit and used it for realistic flooring.

Stranger Things: Byers’ Living Room

Sometimes I make recreations of iconic sets from TV shows, and the living room set from the first season of Stranger Things was on my list for a whil. I used colorful string lights on the ceiling and lined them up to spell out RUN as a nod to a specific scene.

Sewing Sun Room

I created this room inspired by sewing cabinet I saw online. I decided to make the room look like a sun room by having a large window that went up the wall to the ceiling. I cut out a tiny pattern and placed a piece of fabric on the floor as though someone was in the middle of their latest creation.

Library Inside a Book

I created this libaray inside of an old Reader's Digest in just a week (after some initial planning). The shelf contains dozens of books from different genres I printed out and a few even have flippable pages made from the pages cut out of the book. A magnet embedded in the pages allows the lights to turn on when the book is opened.

Attic Bedroom

Wanting to make a room with an interesting shape, I made this attic bedroom. I wanted to use a daybed and have a dormer with a wide windowsill to place plants on and designed the room around those two ideas. I spent a lot of time carefully sculpting many vases and other details, all under a centimeter in height, to ensure the room looked messy and lived-in.
